2007 WCA Spring Golf Tournament

It’s not the PGA Championship or the prestigious Masters, but the WCA Spring Golf Tournament ranks right up there. The tournament, one of the most popular events among WCA member companies, was booked solid shortly into registration, with 70 companies registering 312 participants.

Come event day, a little cool, wet weather couldn’t dampen the spirits of golfers eager to get back on the greens after a long winter. After barbecue lunches sponsored by the Construction Safety Association of Manitoba and HED Insurance, teams teed off at the Elmhurst Golf & Country Club and its neighbour course, the Pine Ridge Golf Club.

In the evening, hungry golfers dined on prime rib at the Elmhurst Club prior to prize presentations by Ron Hambley, WCA Executive Vice-President. Team Sturgeon Construction, consisting of Todd Ritchot, Len Ritchot, Pat Doyle and Wayne Bartley, placed first in the tournament, winning four bar fridges courtesy of Coast Wholesale Appliances Ltd.

Other big winners:

Closest to the Hole - Travel Golf Bags sponsored by Lehigh Inland

Ken Rowson, Pine Ridge

Dennis Giesbrecht, Elmhurst

Closest to the Hole – Bikes sponsored by WCA

Kurt Neustaedter – Pine Ridge

Nolan Ploegman – Elmhurst

Chipping Contest – Taylor Made Rescue Clubs sponsored by CSAM

Len Ritchot – Pine Ridge

Dan Donhouser - Elmhurst

Longest Drive – Wood Wine Boxes sponsored by Lafarge Canada

Rob Tetrault – Pine Ridge

Art Roy – Elmhurst

Raffle Prize Draw – Set of Jazz Golf Clubs

School Presentations - Share Your Experiences!

As part of our Explore Your Future in Skilled Trades / Trade Up! Campaign, Winnipeg Construction Association is offering enticing and informative class presentations on Careers in Manitoba Construction. In a short 30-60 minute presentation we'll give junior high and/or high school students an overview of the various skilled trades and career opportunities in Manitoba construction and provide a list of post-secondary education and apprenticeship programs.

We'd also like to have a young skilled tradesperson speak about their experiences in Manitoba's construction workforce. If you or one of your co-workers or employees would be willing to share your experiences and knowledge at an upcoming school presentation, please contact Twila Driedger, Communications Coordinator at 775-8664 x 2242 or tdriedger@wpgca.com. Your participation is appreciated!

Gold Seal Update: June 2007

With Gold Seal applications coming in at an unprecedented rate, this is a busy time of year for CCA and local association staff:

  • The April 2007 exam saw 114 construction managers write their Gold Seal exam as Project Manager, Owner Project Manager, Estimator or Superintendent at construction associations across Canada. Ninety of these achieved a passing grade (75% or better) while 24 did not. The 80% pass rate is typical of most Gold Seal exams. The results of the Construction Safety Coordinator exam, the first ever written, are being studied by the national development team to ensure that the exam is of the highest quality.
  • A number of local construction associations have requested Gold Seal presentations for their members. Questions in these sessions range from the broad benefits of the program to technical details on how to apply to Gold Seal as a condition of contract. Summer meetings are a great time to boost member interest in certification.
  • Gold Seal staff will be meeting with representatives of the Canadian Federation of Construction Safety Associations in Quebec City. The early results from the first Construction Safety Coordinator exam will be discussed, as well as the equivalency of various provincial Construction Safety Officer (CSO) designations. The next Gold Seal exam, on October 12, will see another large group of safety applicants writing for their certification.
  • Mr. Paul Cappon, President and CEO of the Canadian Council on Learning, noted recently that one of the five "basic principles" of increased workplace training in Canada is the presence of solid certification systems which “recognize and validate the achievements of individuals who take part in training”. This fits with the CCA’s long-held position that Gold Seal is a necessary foundation for professional development in the construction sector. More information can be found at www.ccl-cca.ca.
  • A recent meeting of the Gold Seal committee noted that the program has been slow to catch on in the mechanical, electrical and specialty trades. Only 12% of Canada’s 6,000 Gold Seal certified managers are from the Electrical Contracting sector, and only 10% are Mechanical Contractors. Special attention will be focused on ‘getting the word out’ to these sectors during the summer and fall.
  • More program information can be found at www.goldsealcertification.com.
