Support the Skills Manitoba Competition!

Winnipeg Construction Association is once again organizing the Carpentry and Cabinetry Competition at Skills Manitoba, an event designed to improve the public perception of trade-based careers by bringing students, employers and educators together for a friendly day-long competition.

WCA is in need of a carpenter willing to judge the Cabinetry Competition. Interested individuals can contact Kelly Pochuk at kpochuk@wpgca.com or 775-8664 ext. 2225.

WCA is also looking for sponsorship and contributions toward the bursary, materials or registrant prizes. To view the Skills Manitoba High School Building Competition support form, click HERE.

Tax Credit Reminder

Don't forget to claim the following credits on your income tax returns, if you're eligible:

Tradesperson's Tools Deduction

Employed tradespersons are eligible to receive an annual deduction of up to $500 to help cover the cost of new tools necessary to their trade if the following conditions are met:

  • the total cost exceeds $1,000;
  • the tools were bought after May 1, 2006;
  • the purchase was made by an employed tradesperson.

Apprenticeship Job Creation Tax Credit

Eligible employers will receive a tax credit equal to 10 per cent of the wages paid to qualifying apprentices in the first two years of their contract, beginning May 1, 2006, to a maximum credit of $2,000 per apprentice per year.

Young Women's Conference: Be a Mentor!

If you're a woman working in Manitoba's construction industry, Skills Manitoba needs you!

On April 12, 2007, Skills Manitoba is hosting a one day conference for young women in Grade 8 to learn about trade and technology careers available in today’s employment market. The conference will highlight different vocations in trades and technology, introduce young women to women mentors working in the trades or technology field and provide employment and career planning information.

NEEDED: 30 women to be mentors as well as an individual willing to speak at a Teacher Break-Out Session.

Rotary Career Symposium: Volunteers Needed!

The Winnipeg Construction Association is once again hosting a Trade Up! Careers in Manitoba Construction booth at the Rotary Career Symposium, an event designed to provide valuable information about various education and employment options available to students in Senior 1 through Senior 4.

With Manitoba's construction climate at an all-time high, skilled tradespeople are in high demand. The need to reach students who are considering their career options has never been greater. Help us promote careers in Manitoba construction by volunteering for a two-hour shift at this year's symposium, April 11 & 12, 2007.
