Red Carpet Treatment at Builders’ Night Gala '07 Revellers received the royal treatment at Winnipeg Construction Association’s annual Builders’ Night Gala on Friday November 2, 2007. The red carpet was rolled out to welcome a whopping 933 guests, an attendance that exceeded even last year’s record.
Held at the Winnipeg Convention Centre, guests indulged in four complimentary full host bars and a trendy – and extremely popular – martini bar before dining on a fabulous four course meal. Attendees enjoyed a Local Mixed Grill featuring Grilled Filet Mignon “Marchand de Vin” napped with Café de Paris Buerre and Grilled Breast of Chicken “au Poivre Madagascar” served with a Potato William, Ratatouille filled Tomato and Butter Glazed Green Beans.
The proceeds from Builders’ Night go toward WCA’s Trade Up! Careers in Manitoba Construction, a campaign designed to promote skilled trade careers in construction to youth and young adults. In his opening remarks, WCA President John Bockstael noted that WCA and its members believe strongly in investing in the industry’s development, and in supporting training, recruitment and access to apprenticeship. Support of the Construction Industry Wages Act is another way to recruit and retain skilled tradespeople, Bockstael added. Properly trained people receiving competitive and fair wages will stay in this city and province to deliver on the needs of the community. Average WCB Assessment Rates Drop Effective January 1, 2008, the average assessment rate that Manitoba employers pay for their workers' compensation coverage will drop nearly 5% from $1.68 to $1.60. On average, Manitoba employers will pay $1.60 per $100.00 of their assessable payroll to the WCB for injury insurance coverage, which includes wage loss payments, medical benefits and rehabilitation services. That rate may be higher or lower, depending on the employer's injury experience and the safety and health risk of their industry. WCB President and CEO Doug Sexsmith credits healthy investment returns and safer workplaces for WCB providing among the lowest rates in the country. The workplace injury rate in Manitoba has fallen 22% from 2000 to 2006. Sexsmith said employers can pay lower premiums by formalizing health and safety procedures and implementing effective disability management and return to work programs. Overall, about 85% of employers will experience lower WCB premium rates in 2008. The average assessment rate is falling at the same time injured workers are receiving improved benefits as a result of recent amendments to the Workers Compensation Act.
