Construction News Bulletin - URGENT! Recommendations of the Construction Industry Wages Consultation Panel on The Construction Industry Wages Act and Regulations In January 2008, the Construction Industry Wages Act (CIWA) Panel filed a Report of recommendations on the Construction Industry Wages Act and Regulations to the Honourable Nancy Allan, Minister of Labour and Immigration. The Panel reviewed CIWA's wage schedule, hours of work and classifications and suggested the following changes: Classifications: There were no recommended changes to the classifications in the Heavy sector. In the ICI sector, the Panel recommended that the trainee rates for Floor Coverer and Insulator (Heat and Frost) be deleted, as the classifications have become designated trades under The Apprenticeship Act. Accordingly, there is no need to include "trainee" rates for these classifications as the apprenticeship provisions of The Apprenticeship Act will apply in the normal course. Only the Journeyperson rates need to be included in the Wage Schedule for these two classifications. Hours of Work: The Panel is not recommending any changes to the standard hours of work for either the ICI or Heavy sectors. The existing hours of work (both weekly and daily) should be maintained. Wages: The Panel recommends that effective June 1, 2008, January 1, 2009 and January 1, 2010, the wage rates for the 10 classifications contained in the Heavy Wage Schedule be increased in accordance with the wage rates identified in APPENDIX "E" below. APPENDIX "F" below outlines the Panel's increased wage recommendations for all classifications in the ICI Schedule. While the recommendations will most likely be fully accepted as is, there is a slight chance that further adjustments (increases) may be made to the proposed rates prior to the dates indicated. We will keep you fully informed of any developments. WCA will have copies of the "little green book" containing the new CIWA rates for distribution prior to the implementation date.
